Google Analytics on Japan in Small Ways

With your permission, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how readers find and use Japan in Small Ways and to improve our articles and content. Statistics cookies are optional. We load Google Analytics and use its statistics cookies only after you choose Statistics. You can reject them or change or withdraw your choice through Cookie Settings in the footer. Opening Cookie Settings does not change your choice.

Google Analytics 4 uses first-party cookies to distinguish browsers and maintain session information. These help us understand traffic sources, page visits and interactions. Google provides the Analytics service. See Google’s privacy information.

Google’s default cookies are _ga, used to distinguish browsers, and _ga_55XV311REJ, used to maintain session state on this website. Google specifies a default expiration of two years. Actual lifetimes may be shorter because of browser restrictions or cookie settings. Cookie lifetimes are separate from the 14-month retention settings described in our Privacy Policy.

Rejecting optional statistics cookies does not prevent you from reading the website, subscribing to the newsletter or receiving the welcome Guide. Newsletter subscription and optional Brevo email engagement measurement have their own separate consent arrangements.

For optional Guide sign-up measurement, we may use two short-lived first-party cookies, jisw_stats_revoked_v1 and jisw_stats_watch_v1. They contain only a format version, timestamps and expiry times to check that Statistics consent has not been withdrawn during a pending sign-up. They expire within two minutes and are used only for this consent safeguard, not for advertising, profiling or newsletter management.

With Statistics consent, a tab-specific sessionStorage flag, jisw_guide_submission_v3, helps us recognise a successful sign-up redirect and avoid counting it twice. The flag is valid for no more than two minutes and is removed when consumed or invalidated. Neither these cookies nor this flag contain email addresses, newsletter subscriber IDs, double opt-in tokens or campaign parameters.
